This page is dedicated to 3D films, as well as others that I consider really special. Most are on Blu-Ray 3D and require a special player (A 3D one) and a special TV (Yep, a 3D one). As an alternative, a 3D projector can be used and shone onto a white back drop (in reality you can shine it on any back drop you want but it isn't going to work well.
In my home I have 3D theater system that includes a surround sound system, a 3D player and a passive TV. I also have an active 3D projection system that I use for portability purposes.
Active 3D systems require electronic glasses that rapidly alternate turning each eye on and off to create the 3D illusion. A passive 3D systems requires special glasses that doesn't require any electronics.
I also have a small collection of the old style red/blue 3D movies. These are generally on DVD only require the goofy looking red/blue glasses and does not require any special TV or projector to utilize.
Though most 3D TV;s and some Blu-Ray players have the ability to convert to 3D on the fly, the 3D illusion is not as good as if the video was actually presented in 3D.
More about 3D coming soon.

My cousin’s daughter brought to my attention a defect in my categorization of the 3D movies. She stated that Captain America should come before Amazing SpiderMan.
Do I have egg on my face or what? My Waverly elementary education taught me that adjectives go in front of the rest. So I thought Amazing, being an adjective, should be first.
However, her higher degree of education (is it possible that she is educated beyond her ability) states differently and that I should instead categorize the movies by the degree of hotness of the main characters.
I can see this creating a lot of hard feelings among my male friends, so please let me apologize in advance. I will do my best to be non-biased when ranking the movies.
I could use a little though. I need to know which is hotter, Chewbacca or the Hulk? Choosing between IronMan or Thor, the answer is obviously Jim Carrey. And for television, do I go with Jaleel White (Steve Erkel) or Joseph Gordon-Levitt? And do I rate them on their appearances now or when they were a younger, dreamer individual? And where exactly does Jim Worrell (the "Hey Vern" guy) fit in? Sure near the top but a little clarification would be nice.
Come back and see if you agree with my categorization choices. And thanks Aricka, for bring this to my attention. In the mean time, I’ll leave the movies in a mostly alphabetized (not my preferred method but it’ll do) manner.

Fright Night
I recall seeing Fright Night back in the mid 1980’s with my steady girlfriend. Though rated ‘R’, I didn’t find it scary even if it did provide some startlements (maybe startlezations would be a better word). The movie did present plenty of hand and leg squeezes from my girlfriend and coupled with a good story line and sufficient acting did make for an enjoyable movie.
Fast forward to last night. As part of my birthday 3D movie marathon, I finally watched the latest Fright Night, filmed in 2011. I’m a little late in watching it; by 10 years. But as I say, if I’ve never watched it, it’s new to me.
This movie is less humorous, though there is some, and scarier than the original. Besides the usual cinematography that takes advantage of 3D by positioning cameras to capture the fly at you stuff, the tone of the movie is somewhat darker. And it all takes place in one night. With the exception f the first 15 minutes or so of ‘high school’ acting (people posing as high school aged kids and aren’t good actors to begin with) the acting is very good. Colin Farrell makes a very good and convincing modern vampire.
No nudity and very little adult themes is over shadowed by the ‘F’ word. However, if it can be considered more acceptable, they are said by English peoples who can not only use it to new heights, tend to use it in their everyday language and is generally not viewed as it is here in the US. Still, the story and film was done here in the US and could have been written out and replaced with something else of equal emphasis; like ‘golly’ or ‘gee’.
Still, there was some humor, the acting was good, the special effects very good, the story line excellent, and the 3D was very good also. I don’t believe that the scary factor will keep any one awake but certainly could keep you on the edge of your seat and your heart rate elevated.
If you can get get past some of the language, I recommend this as a good horror and fun movie and an excellent example of 3D done correctly. Jr High aged kids is iffy but I certainly wouldn’t allow grade school aged children to watch.
G-Force
A fun movie for the family. It is rated PG for rude humor though there is no bad language. Lots of action and special effects. The 3D is nicely done.
A Roger recommends movie.
Genesis:
Paradise Lost
This is a Christian based documentary done ion 3D. Seems kinda of a waste to do a documentary in 3D but the 3D is very, very good.
Ghost Rider
Not a family movie but certainly does not have as bad a language as some TV shows.
The plot is OK, the special effects and 3D pretty good.
Gods of Egypt
The language isn’t bad but there are brief adult themes showing nothing except bare back. The plot is good, camera tricks and special effects are good. The 3D is pretty good as well.
A fun and action packed film but not a family movie.
Hansel & Gretel:
Witch Hunters
Although I have owned it for quite a while (years), I finally got around to watching Hansel & Gretel. It was part of my 3D movie birthday marathon. The movie is in the vein of modern remakes of old tales. Some pull it off, some don’t. This one did a pretty good job.
I won’t go into the movie plot except to say that it was pretty good. Unfortunately, this movie like many now days, used the ‘F’ word a few times; it wasn’t needed and didn’t add to the movie. The ‘F’ word wasn’t used so much that it over powers the movie (maybe used 5 or 6 times). There was a back butt scene (similar to side boob).
The plot and acting was good. The special effects was great. The 3D was fantastic even if you could tell at times that the scenes were setup to maximize the 3D effect.
I found the movie fun and recommend it, especially in 3D.
The Hobbit:
An Unexpected Journey
I actually grasped the Hobbit series less than the Lord of the Ring series. It was a little harder to tell who the good guys were in the Hobbit compared to the Ring series (everyone, good and bad, as dirty looking in Rings).
I’m not a huge fan of the plot but I do appreciate the makeup, sets and special effects. The 3D was OK in the first 2 but stepped up in the 3rd.
Though not on my recommended list, I’d watch it again with Hobbit and Lord fans and anyone who may be interested.
The Hobbit:
The Desolation of Smaug
I actually grasped the Hobbit series less than the Lord of the Ring series. It was a little harder to tell who the good guys were in the Hobbit compared to the Ring series (everyone, good and bad, as dirty looking in Rings).
I’m not a huge fan of the plot but I do appreciate the makeup, sets and special effects. The 3D was OK in the first 2 but stepped up in the 3rd.
Though not on my recommended list, I’d watch it again with Hobbit and Lord fans and anyone who may be interested.

Hugo
It’s a slow story but appears to be a very beautiful, innocent, love story between two children. No bad language that I recall or inappropriate scenes.
The setting is France and though shot in British English, would probably be a good movie to show in another language (several provided) to say a foreign language class (my opinion).
The cinematography is very good and contains some of the most beautiful 3D I’ve seen. It’s certainly a romantic movie.
I, Frankenstein
Another take on vampires; this time with the legend of Frankenstein. He’s not a monster though. Pretty good story line and lots of good 3D.
I, Robot
An older movie and despite the graphics and special effects showing this, still has impressive visuals.
No adult situations or nudity (a long side shot of Will Smith in the shower and the leading lady can be seen in the shower from the back; not needed but shouldn’t be offensive. Some language.
Great plot and story line with some unexpected twists. The 3D is pretty good and if you consider it’s age, it’s very good.
A Roger Recommends but not as a family movie.
Immortals
A fun movie around Greek mythology. Good plot, actors, action (copious and bloody) with very good sets and 3D. Does have some brief back butt nudity.
Not recommended for young young children but is a Roger likes movie.
Insurgent
A This is part three of the Divergent series. The only one done in 3D and not very well done at that. I didn't care for the movie, the plot, the actors; really I didn't like the movie or series at all, though I thought the last 10 minutes or so of the first one was going to make the series interesting; it didn't.
A Roger believes it a flop and should be passed movie.
John Carter
This is a Disney branded movie and for that reason, I am certainly disappointed in it. The Plot and action was pretty good. The 3D was fair. However, for a Disney movie, I was taken back by the curse words. There wasn't that many but as a Disney branded movie, there shouldn't have been any. Disney owns many other movie studios and could have released it under one of those and not tarnished the Disney brand with the likes of using stupid and unneeded cuss words.
Disney has lost it's way as far as being a pristine family venue and I shouldn't be taken back. But I am. Shame, shame.
It is an OK movie to watch but certainly others that are better family movies.
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The 3D was pretty good. The story was so-so. I would have expected more action and excitement in the movie since Brandon Frasier stared init. Worth a watch bit it could have been so much better.
Jupiter Ascending
An original plot, plenty of action, a little language but not bad. The special effects and 3D were very good. Not a family movie but OK for JR High and above I believe.
A Roger recommends movie.
Jurassic Park
Of course, Jurassic Park is a classic. Originally released in theaters in 1993 with a Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray 3D re-release in 2013. Let me just say that without a doubt that Jurassic Park 3D has to be one of the best 3D movies of all time.
Jurassic Park:
Jurassic World
A fun and action packed continuation of the Jurassic Park series. Lots of action and great dinosaur modeling and special effects. A little language but nothing not heard on TV. No real blood and gore so only the dinosaur attacks should prove scary to young children. The 3D is pretty good as well.
A Roger recommends.
Jurassic Park:
Jurassic World:
Fallen Kingdom
A fun and action packed continuation of the Jurassic Park series. Lots of action and great dinosaur modeling and special effects. A little language but nothing not heard on TV. No real blood and gore so only the dinosaur attacks should prove scary to young children. The 3D is pretty good as well.
A Roger recommends.
Kung Fu Panda
It started out slow but ended up moving along a pretty good clip. Though 3D was noticeable throughout the movie, it was only done very well a few times and for a few moments in the whole of the movie.
It had some funny moments but there certainly have been funnier movies for children.
I just rate the movie as OK. Apparently, others found it better than I as there are Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 out as well.
The Last Airbender
The Story isn’t very good, the actors, children for the most part, aren’t very good and the 3D is poorly done.
The Legend of Tarzan
Similar to one of my pet-pevs of Super Hero movies, every time a Tarzan movie comes out, the writers and directors have to go through how Tarzan came to be, with each doing their own little spin on it that really doesn't provide anything to the movie. I was surprised about this movie. Even though they did go over the Tarzan beginnings, it was sporadic and dispersed throughout the movie. So the first 20 minutes or so wasn't spent telling the audience that, surprise (OK, not a surprise) Tarzan was raised by apes after his parents were killed.
I am not a Tarzan movie fan however, I did enjoy this one. Some humor, a pretty good plot, decent actors, a pretty good amount of action and when they used 3D, it was really good 3D. I think I may have heard a S word, the H word and the D word but it wasn't prevalent.
I believe that The Legend of Tarzan is a good family movie and Roger likes it.
The Lion King
Animated
I only watched a few minutes of this to insure that the disk was good. In that time, I noticed that the 3D appeared to be done very well. Other than that, it is the same animated movie that Disney released back in June 1994. It appears they did a very good job of taking the 2D movie and making it into 3D.
A Roger highly recommends it movie.
The Little Mermaid
Originally released in theaters in 1989, the Blu-Ray 3D version was released in 2013. The Little Mermaid is truly a classic however, the 3D make is was not handled well. Though you can tell is is in 3D, it is very flat and unimpressive. It appears that Disney spent very little time making the 3D version and at first glance one might think that they just ran it through a 3D processor.
Because of the added difficulty in setting up 3D (assuming your using a projector and not already setup) and having to deal with glasses, coupled with the potential attention span of a child, I don't think I would mess with the 3D version and just show the 2D version. There's really no wowwing 3D moments so why chance lost or broken glasses?
